Match Report - Falkirk RFC 27-28 Highland RFC
Saturday’s game was not for anyone with high blood pressure! A cracking game with two teams well met who gave it everything on the pitch.
Falkirk took the spoils in the first half. Highland errors gave them valuable field position, of which they took full advantage, going in under the posts twice to go 14–0 ahead within the first 10 minutes.
The Highland boys didn’t let their heads down however, playing the entertaining rugby we all love to watch and eventually going from side to side to find an overlap on the wing with Fergus Riach dotting down for the score.
Falkirk hit back, scoring another try, before coughing up possession 5 minutes later allowing Highland to push for their second score - Fergus snaking in once again on the wing. Two penalties against Highland just before half time saw the score at half time sitting 27-14.
If the first half belonged to Falkirk, the second half belonged to Highland with an immense defensive shift and repeated visits to the hosts’ 22, ultimately holding their hosts scoreless
Seamus Ross sliced through the defence 5 minutes in, taking the score to 21-27. Game, well and truly on.
A controversial touch call saw one of Magnus Henry’s trademark run ins thwarted. Then, after sustained Highland pressure on the line, Connor Ross went over to win the bonus point. With captain Scotty Fraser nailing all 4 conversions, that took Highland into a narrow lead for the first time with about 10 minutes left to play…..
The game could easily have gone either way, with both sides then frantically trying to seal the game with the ball going end to end. A late penalty to Falkirk 2 minutes before the death almost broke Highland hearts, but went wide. Final score 27-28.
Moment of the match - Flanker Calum Carson lamping the ball up the pitch with a cracking 50/22 towards the end of the game providing some welcome relief on pressure – and no, we didn’t know he could kick either!
Coach Davie Carson was delighted with his team’s gutsy performance against a strong Falkirk side and praised their strong and mature 2nd half to come back from 27-14 down and clinch the bonus point victory on the road.
Falkirk will almost certainly feel that was one that got away. Thanks to Falkirk RFC for a great match – the return fixture at Canal Park will be another cracker.
Our next home game is this Saturday (13 September) against Kirkcaldy.
