You Can Change A Life, Be a Mentor!

Abby Lucas, Programme Manager, Highland and Western Isles, North Region for MCR Pathways said

My son plays at the rugby club in the U14’s and I am very aware of the huge support the club provides to young people, giving them not only the chance to play rugby, but boosting their confidence, resilience and social skills as they navigate school and life in general; the impact is huge. Some of the Highland Rugby Club younger players already have a mentor through the MCR Pathways programme at their school and rugby is definitely high on their conversation agenda!

What the club does is similar to what MCR Pathways is doing with young people in eleven secondary schools across the Highlands, and perhaps there are people in the club who would like to volunteer to be a mentor.

So what is MCR Pathways?

MCR Pathways is a mentoring charity supporting young people across the Highlands, who face challenges in life.

We’re seeking volunteer mentors to spend just one hour a week at a local secondary school, helping a young person to build confidence, realise their talents and reach their potential.

Every young person is unique! We currently have S2 to S6 pupils in Inverness, Nairn and Ross-shire schools waiting for a mentor to share interests in rugby, football, baking, gaming, theatre, the arts, travel, nature, science, first aid, martial arts, career choices…..our mentors come from all walks of life and all ages. It’s about listening, caring and being a good role model.

Abby added that sometimes people ask,

“What if I can’t make a week because I’m on holiday or away with work one week or something similar?”

Even though the Mentors graphic says 38 weeks of the school year, it is actually a bit more flexible around a volunteer’s availability.

Sometimes people worry about the commitment and letting their mentee down, but as long as we know and can let the young person know, it’s OK.
