Highland 1st XV are back on the road again!
The 1st XV’s next match is a tough away match at Biggar.
Hartree Mill has not been a happy hunting ground for Highland over the last several seasons, and this will be a tough test once again.
Highland currently sit 5th in the league on 40 points with Biggar one place back on 32 points, having only lost one more games than ourselves.
Highland will look to maintain the good form shown in the last two matches against Aberdeen Grammar and GHK, during which they have scored a total of 110 points whilst conceding 19.
I think most would agree that Highland are a different proposition at home than they are away. However closer examination suggests that away day wins are not that far away.
Yes Highland may have lost the odd fixture on the road they may have hoped to win, one of which they avenged on Saturday.
However, they have also tested the current league leaders Kelso to the limit at Poynder Park, ultimately losing 24-21. Those that were there suggested that if the game lasted a few minutes longer we could have stolen the win.
Similarly a Highland error when on the attack in our opponents 22 resulted in conceding last a last minute score to go down 18-14 away to 2nd placed Ayr.
If’s, but’s, and maybe’s don’t count, but I suggest fine margins are all that have prevented this team winning on the road.
Confidence derived form having the ball in hand in the last few games, combined with some of the robust defensive work we’ve seen from the team as a whole when defending will make a difference.
Finally – discipline always matters. If we get an accurate read on what the ref wants and swiftly adapt what’s needed then a win is within reach.
Saturdays opponents Biggar, lost 29-19 away to Kelso yesterday, and beat Dundee on the road by 16-21 in their last game of 2022 on the 3rd of December.
